FINALLY !!! Week 0

Finally !!! Week 0. The time is here for degenerates and sharps alike to flock to the windows and book apps for their first taste of real football action since February. I stick mostly to football and college hoops so like most gamblers things are about to kick into high gear but with that there are things I would like to throw out there to remember for the upcoming seasons. Unfortunately these are boring points. These boring points relate mostly to responsible action and have taught me a lot about gambling and even in life.

  1. Manage your bankroll | Most casual or newer betters might not necessarily have a bankroll set aside for the year. I think what’s more important is establishing an honest and reasonable unit size. A kid in his 20s pulling 40 - 50k making $100 plays daily is going to end up in hot water quick more times than not. A proper unit size will allow you make more confident plays with clearer eyes, even if you are carving away $5 at a time. We are in this to MAKE money.

  2. Consistency | On the topic of units, one of the lessons that have been more valuable to me were pulled from a CBB & MLB handicapper Greg Peterson. I noticed frequent mention to his idea of all 1 unit plays no matter the game. Sticking to the long game. Simplest example is a 3 play day (all +100 odds). You make 2 plays based upon your regular unit size of lets call it $25, but the 3rd game you love and kick it up to $50. You hit your 1st 2 bets and are cruising but the game you loved went sour and didn’t hit. You did your job and should have beat the book with a winning day, up a unit going into the next battle. Instead it was all for nothing but the sweat (Which is good enough for us sickos).

  3. Play with an Edge | Many different variables in a game of 2 opponents create opportunity for many “edges”. If your going to bet a game seriously, find one. Take the time to look into the game and think about the aspects & things professional handicappers are. Anyone can throw a dart at any side of any game and slowly dwindle their bankroll away.

Whats most important is to have fun with it and don’t let it take your over. It’s an extremely slippery slope for some and its easier now than ever to lose it all. I was lucky enough to learn the seriousness of gambling addiction early on before I was do any unrepairable harm. It is lame but it is fact. Responsible gambling is good gambling.
